TDP throws T challenge to Congress

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Tuesday threw a challenge to Congress party and said it would opt out of the bypoll race if the Congress too decides not to enter the fray in the ten assembly constituencies which would go to polls on July 27.

Talking to media after a nearly two-hour long meeting of TDP leaders from Telangana, party deputy leader N Janardhan Reddy held the AICC and central government responsible for the present divide in the state. “It is Congress party which has been playing with the sentiments of the people of both the regions. It was they (Congress), who promised to carve a separate state and went back on their assurance leading to protests, agitations and confusion in the state,” Nagam said. The TDP had not changed its stand on T issue. It had passed a resolution favouring bifurcation and incorporated it in the manifesto and since then it had not gone back on it. Even when the agitation was at its peak, we were in the fore front of the agitation, he said.

“TDP was forced to contest the by-elections since Congress had jumped into the fray,” the TDP leader added. He said the party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday evening held one-on-one meeting with T-leaders who were not in favor of contesting in the by polls and explained to them about the compulsions. Following this all T leaders met on Tuesday to discuss and have now finally decided to play active role in the poll process and ensure the victory of the party candidates.
