The Congress, TDP and TRS have turned their attention to Sircilla constituency, after election commission has given green signal for its byelection on July 27. Of the five assembly constituencies which are going for bypolls in Karimnagar district, Sircilla, which came into focus ever since TRS chief Chandrasekhar Rao’s son KT Rama Rao contested the seat in 2009 elections, turned crucial for all the parties.
No wonder the Congress and TDP are moving strategically to clinch the seat. Though KT Rama Rao was new to the constituency when he was contesting election in 2009 and subsequently won it with narrow majority of 171 votes, later, he tightened his hold over it by focusing on public issues. He continued to visit the constituency even after resigning from his MLA position.
Telangana sentiment is another factor which would boost his chances. As for Congress, it is yet to decide on its candidate. TDP leader and municipal chairman Gudla Manjula, who joined the Congress shortly before elections, contested from here in the last election but stood in third position. TRS rebel KK Mahender Reddy, after losing election narrowly to KT Rama Rao, later, joined the Congress.
The party is looking for candidate who can give stiff competition to KTR. Some local leaders are of the view that Congress could grab the seat by fielding KK Mahender Reddy, who can exploit his own vote bank besides that of the Congress. “If the Congress chooses to ignore KK Mahender Reddy, he may again contest election as an independent candidate,’’ party sources said. Banking on weavers’ votes, TDP is also looking for suitable candidate from this constituency. It is learnt, the party has already finalized one and would officially announce it soon
