The followers and well wishers of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy may be hoping that the Congress high command will give permission for the Odarpu Yatra shortly, but his close aides and loyalists think that the party leadership will not say either 'yes' or 'no' to the proposed tour of Srikakulam from July 8. Jagan, in that case, may resume the yatra as per schedule by taking the high command's 'silence' as permission.
According to sources, the high command has no reason to say 'no' to the tour since it is meant to console the families of the victims who died of shock or committed suicide on hearing the news of the sudden demise of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash on September 2, 2009.
The yatra is, in fact, not a new programme and has already been undertaken in two districts _ West Godavari and Khammam. When Jagan was on his way to Mahabubabad in Warangal district on May 28 on his next leg of the yatra, there was immense pressure on the government and the party high command from Telangana Congress leaders against the yatra. There was also stiff opposition from the Telangana student unions and the TRS. Buckling under pressure, the Congress high command had suggested to Jagan on the night of May 27 to postpone his tour but the young MP decided to go ahead with his tour as all arrangements had been made by his supporters.
However, the tour was aborted with the outbreak of violence at Mahabubabad and the arrest of Jagan. YSR's son then decided to tour Warangal district after the byelections in the region scheduled for July 27.
As for the Srikakulam tour, the Congress high command is not ready to say 'no' since there are hardly any reasons to stop the yatra. Besides , Jagan had already made it clear that the program was 'apolitical and purely personal'. Even the Telangana Congress leaders made it clear that they had no objection to his tour of the other two regions (Andhra and Rayalaseema) of the state. The party leadership does not want to invite criticism from the public, particularly the supporters of YSR's family, by holding Jagan back further. Any decision of the high command hinges on the opinions of chief minister K Rosaiah and PCC chief D Srinivas who are in Delhi now.
